HOW TO CONTACT YOUR ELECTED OFFICIALS
Personally making contact with your elected officials is one of the most important things you can do to effect change on an issue that is important to you. For a list of the 2022 Elected Officials in Contra Costa County endorsed by DPCCC, click HERE.
A phone call is the best way to make your views known to elected officials. It’s more effective than social media, email or even snail mail. A phone call demonstrates that you are highly engaged and deeply committed to your cause. Elected officials take notice. So don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and contact your elected officials!
TIPS ON CALLING:
- Call your own representatives. Regardless of party affiliation, it is most effective to call the elected officials that represent you.
- Then, expect to speak with a staff member, not your elected official, and be prepared to provide your name, hometown and, possibly, your zip code.
- Always be concise and make your points clearly. Be polite in both tone and language.
- Start by explaining why you are calling and what action you would like your elected official to take. When possible, discuss the issue from a personal perspective.
- Finally, thank the staff member for taking the time to talk with you.
- Remember: Although you spoke with a staff member, your views will be conveyed to your elected official.
- Did you reach the office’s voicemail? That is OK: leave a message.
